While the Masters of the Universe movie didn’t do the kind of business that Amazon MGM Studios was hoping for, the franchise will persevere in one way or another. The new movie from Travis Knight was an affectionate love letter to the original series, while still poking fun at its many aspects. If you were thinking about revisiting animated cartoons from the 80s, you might want to consider an upcoming Blu-ray set from Universal. Blu-ray.com has announced that Universal will be releasing all 130 episodes and hours of extra features in a complete series set that’s due to hit retailers on August 25.

The power is in the details

The genesis behind the TV series is legendary at this point. It was based on Mattel’s Masters of the Universe toyline, which many say was repurposed from a set originally developed for Conan the Barbarian, which was rejected as the movie was too violent. This has since been debunked, but the rise of sword and sorcery movies did have an impact, and the cartoon ran all through the eighries, even being given a spin-off with She-Ra: Princess of Power. Indeed, two TV movies made that team up the characters (who are brother and sister) are included in the set. Here are the specs:

  • Saturday Morning Legacy of Filmation
  • Hope, Honor, Heart: The Origins of She-Ra

Could a sequel still happen?

While Masters of the Universe didn’t get to flex its muscles for more audience members this past summer, Amazon doesn’t operate like a normal film studio and the movie could still have a chance of finding its audience on streaming. Shortly after the film’s release, Amazon MGM’s distribution chief issued the following statement: “Travis Knight and the entire cast and filmmaking team have delivered something truly special, and this opening is exactly the kind of critical first moment that validates our holistic distribution strategy — building awareness and engagement that will carry well beyond the theatrical window.”
