Netflix‘s adaptation of Alice Oseman’s Heartstopper is coming to an end with the upcoming film Heartstopper Forever, and today the streamer is debuting a tear-jerking trailer featuring a brand-new song by pop sensation Olivia Rodrigo. The finale film wraps up the events of the comic-of-age series, focusing on the blossoming relationship between Nick (Kit Connor) and Charlie (Joe Locke), two high school students who fall in love and must learn to let go as the future beckons.
Heartstopper Forever premieres on July 17, 2026. Today’s trailer provides a two-minute glimpse at the upcoming film, set to Olivia Rodrigo’s “Stupid Song,” a brand-new track from her upcoming album You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love. Rodrigo’s song perfectly captures the heightened emotions of the Heartstopper finale, as anxiety about the future, questions about commitment, and the challenges of surviving a long-distance relationship take hold.
What’s Heartstopper Forever about?
Here’s the official synopsis for Heartstopper Forever, courtesy of Netflix.
“In this final film Nick and Charlie are inseparable, but with Nick preparing to leave for university and Charlie finding new independence at school, the reality of a long-distance relationship begins to weigh on them. Doubts take hold, and their relationship faces its biggest challenge yet. Meanwhile, their friends are also navigating the ups and downs of love and friendship, confronting the bittersweet challenges of growing up and moving on. Can first loves really last forever?”
Young love is a challenging thing to navigate. I’m watching my nieces go through similar heartbreaks right now as they prepare for college next year, and I do not envy them. My wife and I are inseparable, but we’re also good at giving each other space when we need it. It’s important to establish boundaries, find a healthy balance, and listen to one another when the other says they need some solo time. Nick and Charlie are about to learn all about that as they approach adulthood. I’m not gonna lie, I’m a big Heartstopper fan, and watching this trailer is making me feel all sorts of ways about the series coming to an end. I’m glad the show got to go out on its own terms with a finale film, rather than getting unceremoniously canceled like so many other Netflix projects.
