Hellboy 3: Ron Perlman still up to finish trilogy, if given the chance

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

While ostensibly talking about his most recent upcoming blockbuster – the big-budget videogame adaptation Monster Hunter – Comicbook.com got star Ron Perlman to talk a bit about the possibility of once again starring in Guillermo del Toro's Hellboy III, thus capping off the original trilogy they started back in 2004 (despite the existence of the financially unsuccessful and critically-panned 2019 reboot starring Stranger Things' David Harbour).

Here's what Perlman had to say:

Well, I'm fond of David Harbour. He's a really good guy and he's a really good actor, so I was hoping for the best for him, but I had my Hellboy epoch, era, was what it was…This has really nothing to do with it. There was no overlap. They were two completely different entities. So I didn't have an opinion about the new Hellboy or a wish for it to succeed or fail, but I did make it clear that if there was a chance to finish the trilogy with Guillermo, as we had done the first two films and in the image of what he had in mind in terms of closing all of the circles, that is something that I would, to this day, consider doing. But since it [didn't happen], then I had moved on and I didn't have an opinion about any of it. And I'm not being effusive or hyperbolic, that's just the truth of it.

So it's definitely cool that Perlman's still open to the possibility of reprising the role if it were to be presented to him, but it also makes sense that he's not keeping his hopes up – especially since it ultimately didn't happen anyway. And, furthermore, the fact that the reboot was a failure doesn't necessarily mean the studio will go back to the original cast. Though with the Snyder Cut being a thing that's happening – anything's possible! Here's hoping!

Meanwhile, you can next see Perlman in the aforementioned Monster Hunter movie – also starring Milla Jovovich and Tony Jaa – which is out in select theaters right now (check you local listings)!

So what do you guys think? Would you like to see Perlman and del Toro finish their proposed trilogy? Or would you prefer to give the franchise a rest in the interim? Either way, sound off below!
