Our last update on the proposed HIGHLANDER reboot/remake had TWILIGHT scribe Melissa Rosenberg hopping aboard as the new screenwriter on the flick. Now that several months have gone by without nary a word on the project, our hopes that it was squashed seemed to have been answered… Today’s news, however, proves that rarely are we ever that fuckin’ lucky.
RCR Media Group has joined forces with Summit Entertainment (again bringing images of TWILIGHT to our minds) to fully finance HIGHLANDER, with FAST FIVE and new TERMINATOR helmer Justin Lin still in line to direct. Neal H. Moritz’s Original Films is producing. No telling how this affects Lin’s work on TERMINATOR, but as HIGHLANDER is further along in the development process, an educated guess says it moves forward first.
RCR Media has recently been in the business of funding a batch of high-profile direct-to-DVD sequels. Titles like 30 DAYS OF NIGHT: DARK DAYS and the upcoming QUARANTINE 2 and HOSTEL: PART III are theirs.
“Highlander is a property that is known around the world, and Summit’s re-imagination is sure to appeal to both existing and new fans of the Highlander lore,” said RCR executive Rui Costa Reis.
As with anything that’s still coming together, we’ll have to wait and see how it ultimately shapes up. But so far, nothing about this seems like it will be “sure to appeal” to me. How about you?
