Darren Aronofsky developing futuristic sci-fi series MaddAddam for HBO

HBO has put in development the futuristic sci-fi series "MaddAddam", to be executive produced by Oscar-nominated BLACK SWAN helmer Darren Aronofsky through his Protozoa Pictures banner, according to Deadline.

The project, based on Margaret Atwood’s book trilogy "Oryx and Crake", "Year Of The Flood", and "MaddAddam", is being developed as a potential directing vehicle for Aronofsky. "MaddAddam" marks the first project to come out of the three-year first-look deal the filmmaker and his Protozoa Pictures inked with HBO in January.

Atwood's “speculative fiction” saga about a world in which corporations have supplanted governments began in “Oryx and Crake” (2003), and continued in “The Year of the Flood” (2009),” which offered an alternative perspective of the events in the first novel. Last years ”MaddAddam” continued the story, from both books, of a world where mankind was nearly wiped out by a biological plague called “The Flood.”

Here’s the description of the first book via Amazon to give a little more context:

Snowman, known as Jimmy before mankind was overwhelmed by a plague, is struggling to survive in a world where he may be the last human, and mourning the loss of his best friend, Crake, and the beautiful and elusive Oryx whom they both loved. In search of answers, Snowman embarks on a journey–with the help of the green-eyed Children of Crake–through the lush wilderness that was so recently a great city, until powerful corporations took mankind on an uncontrolled genetic engineering ride. Margaret Atwood projects us into a near future that is both all too familiar and beyond our imagining.

That sounds like the start of a big, sweeping, epic sci-fi story which would make for a great HBO series. And Aronofsky's involvement with "MaddAddam" just made this project even more interesting.

We'll keep you posted on news regarding "MaddAddam" as we hear it, hopefully sooner rather than later.
