David O. Russell now in line to direct Maleficent for Disney?

Damn…how is it Darren Aronofsky and David O. Russell are always swapping projects?

Last month we told you Aronofsky was being courted to direct MALEFICENT for Disney, this after Tim Burton passed on directing the broad Angelina Jolie vehicle. Now, according to THR, O. Russell may be circling the gig.

As you know, O. Russell was nominated for Best Director for THE FIGHTER earlier this year, a film that Aronofsky was attached to direct before going off to make THE WRESTLER. Both THE FIGHTER and BLACK SWAN lost out to Tom Hooper for THE KING’S SPEECH. And I lost our goddamn office Oscar pool!

As for MALEFICENT, the script comes from Linda Woolverton (ALICE IN WONDERLAND, THE LION KING) and spins a live-action take on Sleeping Beauty, telling the fairy tale from the point of view of the evil witch who threatened to kill the princess.

O. Russell recently bailed on UNCHARTED: DRAKE’S FORTUNE, so his schedule seems clear to take MALEFICENT on if he so chooses. Working with Angie Jolie is quite alluring, although her hubby Brad is good friends with Mr. Clooney, and we all know how well Clooney and O. Russell get along. Might this play a part in the ultimate decision?

We shall see…

That’s Some Evil Witch
