Edge of Tomorrow sequel may be Doug Liman's next film

Edge of Tomorrow Tom Cruise Doug Liman

Having wrapped production on the sci-fi film CHAOS WALKING, which is based on a young adult novel by Patrick Ness, director Doug Liman is looking ahead to what his next project may be - and one possibility is another sci-fi project, a follow-up to his 2014 alien invasion / time loop film EDGE OF TOMORROW.

EDGE OF TOMORROW stars Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt will be returning for follow-up. Possibly titled LIVE DIE REPEAT AND REPEAT (but hopefully not), it has been referred to as both a sequel and a prequel, and Liman has said that it will be a

completion of the story we set up in the first movie and the relationships between Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt—because, remember, at the end of the first movie, she doesn’t know who he is—and that’s gonna launch us into an amazing new direction.
It does pick up right where we left off, but it doesn’t keep going forward, because we’d screw with time, because the aliens screwed with time."

Speaking with Collider, Liman gave an update on the project, saying

We’re just working on the script… [We’re no longer working on scheduling issues], now it’s down to we have a window where we could go do it, and we’re frantically working on the script. It’s one of those movies that we’ll only go make if we love the script. It’s not one of those things where the studio is pushing us to make it and they don’t really care if it’s good or not. If the movie happens, it will be because Emily Blunt, Tom Cruise and myself are passionate about making it, which is a great place to be. She doesn’t need this movie, he doesn’t need this movie, and I don’t need it. We’re gonna make it if we really believe in it. We have story that the three of us love, so we’re working hard on the script.

... It has the possibility of being my next film."

Liman didn't offer any hints at when this window of opportunity may be. 2018 already looks to be a busy time for Cruise, who is expected to shoot a sequel to the 1986 blockbuster TOP GUN sometime this year, with that film scheduled to be released on July 12, 2019. There's also a chance he could have a role in Quentin Tarantino's untitled 1969 project, which recently landed Leonardo DiCaprio as the lead. That one will be released on August 9, 2019.

Cruise stays busy, though, so you never know how many productions he might be able to work on within a year and a half or so. And as far as I'm concerned, the more Tom Cruise movies there are, the better.
