We’ve written about THE PURGE before, although when we did, it was called VIGILANDIA and we didn’t know a whole lot about it, other than a few of the behind-the-scenes names, stars Ethan Hawke and Lena Headey among them. But now thanks to The Hollywood Reporter, this microbudget thriller’s plot has been revealed – and it’s a doozy!

THE PURGE is set in an America wracked by crime and overcrowded prisons. Every year, the government sanctions a 24-hour period during which any and all criminal activity — including murder — is legal.

When an intruder breaks into the gated community where James Sandin (Hawke) lives, he sets off a sequence of events that threatens to tear Sandin’s family apart as they try to survive the night without turning into the monsters from which they hide.

Pretty wild, wouldn’t you say?

Written and directed by ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13 screenwriter James DeMonaco, THE PURGE comes from Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes as well as Jason Blum’s omnipresent Blumhouse Productions (PARANORMAL ACTIVITY, SINISTER).

THE PURGE roughs up theaters on May 31, 2013.
