EXCLUSIVE: Gareth Edwards explains where he’s at with Godzilla

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

I had the opportunity to talk to Gareth Edwards today, director of the acclaimed ultra-indie MONSTERS (which just hit DVD and Blu-ray ), and of course the helmer of Warner Bros.’ upcoming GODZILLA reboot. While we spoke about the making of MONSTERS in great detail (which you’ll be able to hear on next week’s podcast), I wasn’t going to let the opportunity to learn something about GODZILLA pass me by.

Of course, I knew Edwards wasn’t about to just spill the beans on the plot, so I inquired where he currently stands in the process, and if a start date had been set. Here’s his brief response:

“We’re just developing right now. It’s not like there’s a set time frame for everything. The film has got to be the best film it can be.”

When asked if there was a release date set for the film, or if he had been told he had to deliver the film at a specific time, Edwards said: “I can’t speak for them… I do not get that impression. I kind of should probably just leave it at that.”

Frankly, what I was more interested in was how he got the gig, which he spoke freely about… but you’ll have to wait until the next edition of the podcast to hear the whole story.
