The
Arrow interviews UWE BOLL

German Director and all around nice
guy Uwe Boll has been keeping busy. Not only does he have “Alone in
the Dark” in the can (starring Christian Slater, Stephen Dorff, Tara
Reid and me as a piece of furniture) he also recently wrapped the
film adaptation of the video game BloodRayne. BloodRayne has quite
the cast on its slab:

Kristanna

Loken, Ben Kingsley,
Michael Madsen, Udo Kier, Billy Zane, Michael Pare and Michelle
Rodrigez. WOW!

Here’s
what Uwe had to say about the project.

ARROW: What was it about the BloodRayne property that appealed to
you as a Director?

UWE: To make
a movie with a sexy, female BLADE like character was appealing
enough.

ARROW:

What Rating are you aiming for with this picture?

UWE: It will
be a HARD R. The first cut of the movie is 2 hours long and very
violent. The SPLATTER effects were created by Olaf Ittenbach a
German splatter freak.

ARROW:
Being that this is
a prequel to the game, Nazis won’t be involved in the narrative
(like in the game). If a sequel was to happen, would you address the
Nazi plot line?

UWE: For the
next part, we want it to take place in a US Wild West setting.

ARROW:
Good choice in
choosing Kristanna Loken as BloodRayne. Was it a hard role to cast?

UWE: There
are not many women able to play a character like BLOODRAYNE. She is
not that nice of a character and is far from an easy girl. Loken is
tall, sexy, hard and physical.

ARROW:
Were there any
other “big names” in the running for the part?

UWE: Loken
got our second offer. The first went to Angelina Jolie – but she
didn’t want to play in another videogame movie.

ARROW:
How will you be
communicating the “action” in the film on a visual standpoint? What
are you aiming for?

UWE: We
don’t go for CATWOMAN or a MATRIX type of action. We shot the film
in Romania-Transylvania on original locations. Think a movie like
BRAVEHEART meets INTERVIEW WITH A VAMPIRE.

ARROW:
Gore and
nudity…will they be on the menu?

UWE: Oh yes.

ARROW:
What will be the
ratio of practical effects and CGI in the film?

UWE: We did
most of the effects practically. CGI will be more for Matte
Paintings, Wire removals etc. – no creatures in 3D.

ARROW:
Have you given a
thought as to what kind of music will be in the film? If so please
share with us.

UWE: Henning
Lohner (he has been working with Hans Zimmer for the last 5 years)
will do a big symphony orchestra score for us with very creepy
undertones.

ARROW:
How many of the
cast members in this prequel are signed for a sequel?

UWE:
Everybody wanted to be in the sequel – but too bad – not a lot of
people survived the first one.

(ARROW NOTE: I heard Loken is
signed on for the sequel)

ARROW:
On a different
note, when will “Alone in the Dark” be released on the big screen
and who will be distributing it?

UWE: 2200 screens in USA (LIONS GATE) and around 250 in Canada (by Alliance Atlantis). The release date will be Jan. 28 2005. The press release about the US release will be coming out at the upcoming AFM.

ARROW:
What’s the first
thing you drank every night after a hard day of shooting?

UWE: The
problem was: I shot a lot of NIGHTS, so I’d get home at 7 am – and
then I’d drink nothing – I’d sleep. One shooting day on BLOODRAYNE
though I had JACK DANIELS at 6.30 am in the morning with Michael
Madsen…..but that was it.

ARROW: Drinking JD with Michael Madsen! Life doesn’t get any better
than that! Thanks Uwe!

I’d
like to thank

Uwe

for dropping by the site
again. I for one am looking forward to BloodRayne. The sole thought
of seeing

Kristanna

Loken kicking butt has
me salivating like Pablo’s dog. BRING ON BLOODRAYNE!
