Marty Scorsese getting into the mysterious thriller game with The Snowman?

Now this sounds more like Marty’s speed!

As perhaps our greatest living American filmmaker puts the finishing touches on his Parisian adventure film HUGO, word is Mr. Scorsese is now circling a grisly murder mystery as a potential next film. And possible franchise!

According to Variety, Scorsese has taken an interest in directing Working Title’s adaptation of Jo Nesbo’s bestseller THE SNOWMAN. No offer has been officially fielded, but it looks like Marty may be getting into the crime genre he knows so well.

With Matthew Michael Carnahan in discussion to adapt the script, THE SNOWMAN is set in Oslo and concerns a missing woman whose pink scarf is found wrapped around an ominous-looking snowman. As Hole begins his investigation, he discovers that the crime appears to be the work of a serial killer.

THE SNOWMAN marks the seventh novel in a series that centers on Detective Harry Hole. Obviously, with the whole missing girl angle and Scandinavian element, comparisons to THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO have been mentioned. We know Fincher’s poised to win Oscars for his adaptation…hopefully Scorsese takes this picture on and does an equally bang up job.

What says you? Scorsese the right man for THE SNOWMAN? How about Harry Hole, the detective protagonist? I’ll say it right now, Johnny Depp. Depp just worked with Marty for the first time on HUGO, and given his penchant for dark roles in the past, Harry Hole may be a perfect vehicle. Or maybe I just want to see the guy get back to non-Disney acting. Damn I miss it!
