King Kong vs. Godzilla

Although we're still six months away from the release of GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS, the sequel to 2014's GODZILLA, cameras are already rolling on the next chapter in Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Entertainment's cinematic MonsterVerse, a film that will see the Godzilla of those films clashing with the Kong of last year's KONG: SKULL ISLAND.

THE GUEST / YOU'RE NEXT director Adam Wingard is at the helm of the appropriately titled GODZILLA VS. KONG, and now that the film is in production WB and Legendary have finally released an official synopsis:

In a time when monsters walk the Earth, humanity’s fight for its future sets Godzilla and Kong on a collision course that will see the two most powerful forces of nature on the planet collide in a spectacular battle for the ages. As Monarch embarks on a perilous mission into uncharted terrain and unearths clues to the Titans’ origins, a human conspiracy threatens to wipe the creatures, both good and bad, from the face of the earth forever.

The screenplay was written by Terry Rossio.

As previously announced, GODZILLA VS. KONG stars Alexander Skarsgard, Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, Eiza Gonzalez, Jessica Henwick, Julian Dennison, Demian Bichir, and Millie Bobby Brown, reprising her role from GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS.

Now two more cast members have been announced. Making his Hollywood debut is Shun Oguri, who has already racked up over 100 credits in his native Japan, including Takashi Miike's SUKIYAKI WESTERN DJANGO and Ryuhei Kitamura's AZUMI.

Since Brown is returning from KING OF THE MONSTERS, I've been wondering where the actors who play her parents in that film, Kyle Chandler and Vera Farmiga, are. There's still no word on Farmiga, but it has been confirmed that Chandler will be in GODZILLA VS. KONG.

Mary Parent, Alex Garcia, Eric McLeod, and Brian Rogers are producing this monster mash, with Kenji Okuhira, Yoshimitsu Banno, Jon Jashni, and Thomas Tull serving as executive producers and Jay Ashenfelter, Jen Conroy, and Tamara Kent co-producing.

GODZILLA VS. KONG will be released in 3D and 2D, and in select IMAX theatres, on May 22, 2020. Warner Bros. is distributing the film everywhere except in Japan, where Godzilla's home studio Toho is handling the release.

I love Godzilla and I love Kong, so I am very excited to see these monsters fight again so many years after they first battled in 1962's KING KONG VS. GODZILLA (pictured above).
