Suspiria remake cast confirmed: Swinton! Johnson! Moretz!

Did remakes ever go away, or did I just start noticing them again this year? Following this year's frustrating controversies around remaking GHOSTBUSTERS and MARTYRS, Hollywood had to go ahead and get that long-dreaded SUSPIRIA remake off the ground.

The rumors were true: The film, which Luca Guadagnino is helming for Frenesy Film Company and Mythology Entertainment, has officially cast Tilda Swinton and Dakota Johnson (who were both in Guadagnino's flick A BIGGER SPLASH), also adding teen sensation Chloë Grace Moretz and Mia Goth.

Swinton I will always welcome in my horror films, ever since she blew the roof off in ONLY LOVERS LEFT ALIVE. But we're gonna have to sit down and talk about the rest of that cast. Mia Goth is a fairly unknown element, having held small roles in NYMPHOMANIAC: VOL. II and EVEREST, but those other two faces are quite well known, perhaps too much so.

Although I defend Dakota Johnson as being a better actress than the material in 50 SHADES OF GREY would have you believe, her talents mostly lie in comedy, and I'm not sure how she'll fare in a totally unnecessary remake of a classic art-horror masterpiece. Moretz is also a totally capable actress, but she was too glam to play CARRIE in 2013, and I worry the same fate might befall her if she attempts to step into Jessica Harper's shoes.

Well, I suppose there's nothing we can do about it now. Love it or ignore it, at least we'll always have Dario Argento's SUSPIRIA.

Based on the 1977 film from Italian horror master Dario Argento, SUSPIRIA follows a young ballet dancer who travels to a prestigious dance academy in Europe, only to discover it is a front for something far more sinister and supernatural amidst a series of increasingly grisly murders.

David Kajganich is penning the script based on the pic written by Dario Argento and Daria Nicolodi. SUSPIRIA begins production this month in Italy and Hungary.
