The Refuge: Jason Flemyng stars in Renny Harlin horror thriller

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

The Refuge, the lastest horror film from A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master / Deep Blue Sea / Exorcist: The Beginning director Renny Harlin, is now filming in Bulgaria, with prolific character actor Jason Flemyng heading up the cast.

Coming to us from Revelations Entertainment and B2Y Production, The Refuge was written by Ben Sztajnkrycer and centers on

US military veteran Sergeant Rick Pedroni, who returns home a changed and dangerous man after a tour of duty in Afghanistan where he suffered an attack by a mysterious force. While officials dismiss his behavior as PTSD and order trauma therapy, Pedroni’s wife Kate discovers her husband has been possessed by a malevolent spirit.

Flemyng is joined in the cast by Raza Jaffrey, Sophie Simnett, Johanna Harlin, and Aston McAuley.

The film is being produced by Yariv Lerner, Rob Van Norden, Gary Lucchesi, Michael McKay, Lori McCreary, and Renny Harlin. Voltage Pictures is handling worldwide sales, and the company's Nicolas Chartier and Jonathan Deckter serve as executive producers.

Deckter had this to say about the project:

I’m sure our partners the world over will be thrilled with the perfect recipe for success that has been put together for Refuge: great producers Gary, Lori and Yariv with an outstanding track record in the genre (and all spaces), combined with a cool script and the icon that is Renny Harlin."

Harlin has previously said,

I love making horror films because of the visual opportunities and character studies they offer. The Refuge is a terrifying journey into the deepest corners of the human spirit. It’s not just a regular horror film about a haunted house or a merciless killer. It’s an examination of what can happen when an evil, demonic spirit possesses an innocent mind."

I'm a fan of several Renny Harlin movies (his credits also include Die Hard 2, The Adventures of Ford Fairlane, Cliffhanger, and The Long Kiss Goodnight), so I'm looking forward to seeing how The Refuge turns out.
