The Town that Dreaded Sundown getting remade by MGM

Another remake for you to sharpen your knives over, kids. This time it’s Charles B. Pierce’s chicken-fried horror number THE TOWN THAT DREADED SUNDOWN. Not a title known the world over, the flick certainly has a cult following and has clearly inspired numerous directors, including Rob Zombie. (It’s hard to watch TOWN and not be reminded of moments in THE DEVIL’S REJECTS and HALLOWEEN.)

MGM, which owns the title, is evidently asking agents for possible takes from writers to reboot the 1976 film (which incidentally is getting a Blu-ray revival next year from Shout! Factory). The flick was based on a series of actual murders attributed to a man dubbed locally as the Phantom Killer, who murdered five people between February and May 1946 in Texarkana.

I guess we’re going to have to wait to see which writer will enter this particular town, but I can’t build up any excitement or interest in this project at the moment.
