Universal to turn Johnny Depp into The Invisible Man

Last Updated on July 22, 2021

After a couple years of development, the films that will make up the new shared cinematic universe of Universal Monsters are finally starting to roll forward. Tom Cruise and Sofia Boutella are signed on to star in a new take on THE MUMMY, which Alex Kurtzman will be directing for a June 9, 2017 release, and now we know who is going to be playing one of the other "monsters" in this universe, a character who seems to be a bit under-appreciated in comparison to some of his Universal peers, THE INVISIBLE MAN.

THE INVISIBLE MAN doesn't have a director or a release date yet, but when it goes into the production the film will star Johnny Depp.

Depp is, of course, no stranger to horror. Having gotten his start in the original A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET, he has revisited the genre on multiple occasions since, with films like SLEEPY HOLLOW, FROM HELL, SECRET WINDOW, SWEENEY TODD, DARK SHADOWS, and TUSK.

MEN IN BLACK's Ed Solomon is said to be scripting this new version of THE INVISIBLE MAN.

In the original pic, Claude Rains played a chemist who uses a dangerous drug to turn invisible. The transformation leaves him jealous, paranoid and psychotic and leads to a killing spree.

Producers Alex Kurtzman and Chris Morgan are overseeing the building of the Universal Monsters universe, with several writers currently at work on various monstrous scripts.
