I know it’s not a horror flick, but Matthew Vaughn’s X-MEN: FIRST CLASS is as close to a genre movie as we got this weekend. The prequel opened at #1 with $56 million, a rather poor debut considering its $160 million budget. When adjusted for inflation, its the weakest debut of the series.
Otherwise, not much to report on once again. Scott Charles Stewart’s PRIEST landed at #15 with $370,000. Duncan Jones’ SOURCE CODE was right behind it at #16 with $237,000. Wes Craven’s SCREAM 4 didn’t rank in the Top 20 again but stil grabbed another $77,000 at about 200 theaters.
Next week, we will finally have another genre movie to report on, as J.J. Abrams’ SUPER 8 opens in both conventional and IMAX theaters. Could it be the blockbuster hit of the summer? Check back here next Monday to find out. Additionally, André Øvredal’s THE TROLL HUNTER is receiving a limited theatrical release beginning in New York next week.
