Host 2 sketch/details

One of my favorite flicks of 2007 was THE HOST is, as you probably know, getting itself a well-deserved follow-up – a prequel, as it were (not quite sure how that will work, but I’ll go with it), and SciFi Japan has a press release dishing some details (Jared actually covered this the other day, but it’s a refresher):

THE HOST 2 will take place in Cheonggyecheon (or Cheonggye Stream), a creek running through the downtown of Seoul that leads to the Han River. Cheonggyecheon was covered with concrete between the 1950s and 70s to build a road, but restored in 2005.

The story is set in 2003 when the restoration was at an early stage. Principal characters, such as street vendors, demolition contractors, and policemen are involved with the disorder and conflict caused by the restoration— one of which is, or course, the monsters from underground.

The sketch above depicts a forklift driver who is attempting to block a monster from climbing to the surface from underground… Pretty cool, ain’t it?

Not unlike the first film, there will be a heavy political subtext to the proceedings. The script was written be (supposedly) well-known comic-book artist Kang Full, who comments: “I wanted to maintain the grace of the original film and to overcome the difficulties and limitations a sequel could have. And I wish to show more action with multiple monsters.”

If I had my way, every screenwriter who ever discussed a project would include that last sentence. Oh well, thank god that’s the case here…

Head on over to SCIFI JAPAN for more details!
