Was there ever any doubt about the success of House of the Dragon, the latest show in the Game of Thrones universe? HBO certainly invested a lot in the continuation of the world based on George R.R. Martin’s works. House of the Dragon recently debuted to be HBO’s biggest audience ever for a premiere

In an obvious move, HBO has already ordered a second season of the fantasy series, according to Variety. Nearly 10 million people had viewed the premiere over various platforms, which had then doubled in playback in just four days. Francesca Orsi, the executive vice president of programming for the Home Box Office channel, recently stated,

We are beyond proud of what the entire ‘House of the Dragon’ team has accomplished with season one. Our phenomenal cast and crew undertook a massive challenge and exceeded all expectations, delivering a show that has already established itself as must-see TV. A huge thank you to George, Ryan, and Miguel for leading us on this journey. We couldn’t be more excited to continue bringing to life the epic saga of House Targaryen with season two.”

Martin, who had written the “Fire & Blood” book the series was based on, recently made an appearance at Comic-Con in San Diego, where he was already talking about his plans for season 2 during his panel. This was back in July, before the show had even started. It’s staggering to see such a commitment made after just one episode, but HBO has had great success with this IP and has every confidence in it.

Each entry of the ten-episode season has a price tag of around $20 million. It was also a multi-year labor of love to follow up Game of Thrones with from Casey Bloys, chief officer of content at HBO, co-creator George R.R. Martin, and showrunners Ryan Condal and Miguel Sapochnik.

House of the Dragon takes place 200 years before Game of Thrones and centers around House Targaryen. The series stars Paddy Considine, Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke, Emma D’Arcy, Steve Toussaint, Eve Best, Fabien Frankel, Sonoya Mizuno, and Rhys Ifans.

House of the Dragon airs Sundays at 9 ET on HBO.
