In a move that seems both inspired and unnecessary, Lionsgate will re-release Uwe Boll’s infamous HOUSE OF THE DEAD in a “Funny Edition,” reports Shock Till You Drop.
Straight from the source: Uwe Boll has signed off on this director’s cut that features new dialogue, pop up commentary and animation from the original video game. Says Lionsgate: Original cast includes Jurgen Prochnow and Clint Howard with a special appearance by famed breast augmentation specialist Siegfried Wienermeister. Even the most hardcore fans of the original cult classic will never discover that human flesh tastes like chicken until they watch this hysterically tasteless funny version!
While I think it’s wonderful that both company and director are embracing the ridiculous movie’s near-legendary status as an uncommonly bad pile of ineptly made garbage (and that’s putting it nicely), it also seems a bit of a redundancy. The movie is already a joke (albeit, an unintentional one); calling attention to it isn’t really required.
That said, unlike a few years ago, Mr. Boll is now completely aware of how he’s regarded and what his reputation in the industry is; more and more he seems to enjoy poking fun at himself, therefor becoming less the target of unrelenting fanboy vitriol and more of a class clown. I can’t say I’m uninterested in this new edition, but a buddy of mine better buy or rent it, because if Lionsgate thinks I’m spending a dime on this flick, they’re sadly mistaken.
(I think a major opportunity has been passed up here: how could they NOT ask the MST3K crew to perform a commentary on this? That I would probably buy…)
