Houten’s Headspace

With HEADSPACE hitting DVD next Tuesday, the folks over at KillerReviews had a sit-down with the director of HEADSPACE in one Andrew Van Den Houten.

First off, when asked how he came across the script for the film, Andrew stated that he was looking for something ‘edgy and different’, and when he told Bill Miller (his producing partner and cinematographer), Miller sent him a screenplay that he got from ‘a kid in West Virginia named Troy McCombs’. It was called EXCESS KNOWLEDGE at the time. After some tweaking with the script (namely, taking the original setting out of the suburbs and putting it in Houten’s hometown of New York City), the shoot went off from there.

Houten then talked about some of the departures from the original source material, including the introduction of an older brother character. “I wanted to develop a lot of the backstory and really create something that was original, yet true to the source material,” says Houten. “Obviously, it was Troy McCombs’ story, his idea. You don’t want to go out and make something that is based on someone else’s idea and have it changed so much, that at the end of the day you have no f*cking clue what it is.”

The interview continues on with talk of how Houten got ahold of the big names for the cast, how in some parts of the film revolve around chess, the creature concepts and more. Smack it to get to the interview.
