Image Comics’ Chew getting another shot at screen adaptation

The popular Image Comics property "Chew" is getting another shot at a screen adaptation, this time with Jeff Krelitz and his Quality Transmedia banner, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

It was over three years ago when we last heard word on the potential TV series based on the comic, which was being developed as a pilot by Showtime and Circle of Confusion but never moved beyond that stage. When the option lapsed, Krelitz swooped in and grabbed the rights which he plans on producing as an animated adaptation for digital and home video, while developing a live-action series for television.

Chew centers on a detective who is a "cibopath," a person who gets psychic impressions from whatever he eats, and is set in a world where bird meats are illegal after a bird flu killed millions of Americans.

Krelitz is already in preproduction on the animation front and beginning to meet with showrunners for the TV series, so these projects seem to be on the fast-track.

The book’s trade paperback collections have hit the New York Times’ best-seller charts, and the comic has won an Eisner Award for best new series as well as two Harvey Awards, so it seems the material is ripe for an adaptation with an eager audience already in the wings.
