Images, synopsis, and trailer unveiled for Ridley Scott’s The Martian

Coinciding with the release of the global trailer, 20th Century Fox has updated their official site for Ridley Scott's THE MARTIAN, adding a few new pictures and the following plot synopsis:

During a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet. With only meager supplies, he must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive. Millions of miles away, NASA and a team of international scientists work tirelessly to bring “the Martian” home, while his crewmates concurrently plot a daring, if not impossible rescue mission. As these stories of incredible bravery unfold, the world comes together to root for Watney’s safe return.

Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Kate Mara, Michael Pena, Jeff Daniels, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Sean Bean, Sebastian Stan, Aksel Hennie, and Donald Glover co-star with Damon in the film, which is based on a novel by Andy Weir. Drew Goddard (CLOVERFIELD, THE CABIN IN THE WOODS) handled the screenplay adaptation.

I haven't read Weir's novel, but I've heard nothing but great things about it, and find the concept to be highly intriguing. It doesn't hurt my anticipation of the film that it's directed by Ridley Scott. You know, he has sort of a decent track record when it comes to sci-fi projects.

THE MARTIAN will reach theatres on November 25th. In addition to the trailer, Fox has released to the web a promo video that introduces us to Mark Watney and his fellow crew members as they prepare to blast off for their mission to Mars.
