Fifteen years after we last saw Indy, Harrison Ford puts the fedora on for one last outing as the part-time professor archeologist in James Mangold’s Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. It was recently announced that the Lucasfilm adventure series would be making a film festival debut as the Cannes Film Festival has invited Disney to have its premiere screening at the famous film event. Disney has now announced that the world premiere screening will take place on Thursday, May 18. The film will be following such movies as Top Gun: Maverick as the Tom Cruise summer vehicle similarly made its screen debut at Cannes last year.
The director of such films as Logan and Ford v Ferrari, James Mangold has taken the helm and is the first (and likely only) successor of Steven Spielberg on the famed throwback franchise. Mangold has shared his enthusiasm for finally bringing his vision of Indiana Jones to the big screen, “In 1995, I was honored to come to Cannes with my first film as part of Director’s Fortnite. Twenty-eight years later, I am proud to return with a slightly larger spectacle. My legendary collaborators and I are very excited to share a brand new and final Indiana Jones adventure with you!”
The plot for this installment is kept relatively secret. Only a few details are known, including that it will take place in 1969, Indy will once again come face to face with Nazis, and Phoebe Waller-Bridge will be playing a niece. The trailer has shown us amazing glimpses of the de-aged Harrison Ford in a flashback sequence. As well as returning characters like Sallah, played once again by John Rhys-Davies.
Starring along with Ford are Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag), Antonio Banderas (Pain and Glory), John Rhys-Davies (Raiders of the Lost Ark), Toby Jones (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom), Boyd Holbrook (Logan), Ethann Isidore (Mortel) and Mads Mikkelsen (Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore). The film is produced by Kathleen Kennedy, Frank Marshall, and Simon Emanuel, with Steven Spielberg and George Lucas serving as executive producers. John Williams, who has scored each Indy adventure since the original Raiders of the Lost Ark in 1981, has once again composed the score.
The film will open nationwide on June 30.
