interviews Uwe Boll
German
director Uwe Boll marks his first US Theatrical gig with “House Of
The Dead”. The flick is based on SEGA’s popular horror shooter video
game of the same name and it stars Jonathan Cherry (“Final
Destination 2”), Jurgen Pronchow (“Das Boot”), Ellie Cornell
(“Halloween 4-5”) and Clint Howard (“Ice Cream
Man”). Uwe took a couple of minutes
of his time to talk about the Zombie Party. Here’s what he had to
say…
A: What’s
your favorite horror movie?
U:
The Shining
and Rosemary’s Baby.
A: What was it about this script that made you want to do it?
U: I always wanted to do a real dry, bloody
zombie movie and here was the possibility.
A: Did you play the video game as a form of research?
U: Yes.
A: How faithful will the film be to the arcade game on which it’s based?
U:
Nobody can
show you a POV shooter running around and shooting zombies for 90 minutes.
In the movie, we have young people who are attacked on an island, chased and killed by zombies. We have action
just like in the
video game. SEGA wants to do HOD 4 with our film’s story.
A: What kind of tone will the film sport: humorous, serious or a
mix of both?
U: In the beginning,
there will be some humor
because they think that they’re attending a rave party on that
island.
They basically wanna party. But then, the ravers are all killed and
nine survivors
are left. That’s when the killing and chasing begins. We wanna scare
the audience to death!
A: What’s your visual approach in regards to the film? What are you
going for?
U: We are shooting in a scary
forest at nighttime. We have very nice moonlight and we are shooting
in
Cinemascope where “Resident Evil” was shot in
1:1:85. Like “Final Destination”, our movie looks bigger.
This is not just another teen movie, the violence is more in the
style of “Saving Private Ryan”.
A: Can we
expect lots of gory goods? In your opinion, what will be the gore
highlight of the
film?
U: We have over 15 exploding heads,
people are cut in half or fighting headless. We basically show what
“Resident
Evil” didn’t show.
A: What’s
the most ambitious visual effect in the film?
U:
We have a
Matrix-like set-up with over 300 cameras for a fighting scene.
A: What kind of distribution are you guys aiming for? Wide,
limited, straight-to-video?
U:
Wide theatrical release. It looks
like we’re getting a major company to distribute it.
A:
What rating are you guys aiming for?
U: R-rated– but the DVD will be the
Director’s Cut in NC-17 or X-format.
A: When can we expect the film to be released?
U:
Next Spring/Summer.
I’d like to thank
Uwe for his time. I’m always hip to a new zombie flick and I’m happy
that we’re getting more of them these days. Let’s just hope this dead
puppy delivers the gory goods and doesn’t pull a “Children of
the
Living Dead” on our asses..
