As a die-hard fan of Parks and Recreation, I was pretty psyched when, a few days ago, I was invited to chat with Adam Scott on the red carpet here at CinemaCon. Scott was in Las Vegas for a panel held by Neon, who are putting out his horror flick, Hokum, next month (we loved it when we caught it at SXSW—read our review). Happily, Scott turned out to be exactly the kind of guy you’d hope, with a great sense of humor and a laid-back, easygoing vibe. We spoke about Hokum, his love of genre and genre audiences, which movie scared him the most as a child, and more. For those who don’t know, Scott also hosts a series of podcasts with Scott Aukerman on artists like U2, Huey Lewis, and more. I had to ask him if he knew of the eighties band The Power Station, and his explanation of their particular sound made me totally lose it—which you can see in the interview (he called the supergroup “The Travelling Wilburys minus 15 years plus cocaine”).
I also spoke to the star and director of Neon’s I Love Boosters, LaKeith Stanfield and Boots Riley. Stanfield is always a humble, genuine guy to chat with, and he told me about some of his influences as an actor and his deep trust in his director. As for Riley, he was very happy to talk about his love of theaters and cinematic influences, even pushing back on Martin Scorsese’s (a director he loves) stance on Marvel, explaining his reasons for thinking an event movie can, in its own way, be just as genuine and artistic as more serious fare.
