Interviews: Rhys Ifans and the cast of Star City discuss the For All Mankind spin-off

Since the debut of Apple TV back in 2019, the streaming service has aired dozens of original series, with only For All Mankind and The Morning Show still releasing new episodes. Ambitious and epic in scale, For All Mankind is set to conclude with its fifth and final season, but the alternate history is getting a second volume, Star City, this time set in the U.S.S.R., taking the story back to the beginning.

Star City is a propulsive paranoid thriller that takes us back to the key moment in the alt-history retelling of the space race – when the Soviet Union became the first nation to put a man on the moon. But this time, we explore the story from behind the Iron Curtain, showing the lives of the cosmonauts, the engineers, and the intelligence officers embedded among them in the Soviet space program, and the risks they all took to propel humankind forward.

I spoke with the cast and creators of Star City about the new series. Creators Ben Nedivi and Matt Wolpert talked about what sets this series apart from For All Mankind, while star Rhys Ifans explained the challenges of playing an anonymous character. Ruby Ashbourne Serkis and Adam Nagaitis talked about playing a married couple with secrets, while Josef Davies talked about taking on a character we see later in life in For All Mankind. Plus – Anna Maxwell Martin and Agnes O’Casey discussed the evolution of their characters and how much fun it was to work together. Check out the full interviews in the embed above.

Star City premieres on May 29th on Apple TV.
