We’ve known about STOKER for almost a year now, but how much do we actually know? We know that it was written by actor Wentworth Miller under a pen name (“Ted Foulke”); that Park Chan-Wook (OLDBOY) plans on making it his first foray into English-language filmmaking; and that ALICE IN WONDERLAND star Mia Wasikowska is set to star. Last month, the names Colin Firth and Nicole Kidman popped up in conjunction with the flick, although neither of the Oscar-winners were confirmed as being cast in STOKER at the time. A very intriguing bunch, to say the least.
As far as the story goes, all we’ve had to go on has been the following break down: The film follows an eccentric teen named India Stoker (Wasikowska) who, while mourning the death of her father, suddenly must deal with an uncle who mysteriously appears…and the strange things that then happen.
Now the Daily Mail is coming at us with some significant news regarding the project; for starters, they’re reporting that Firth and Kidman are definitely on board, but that isn’t the shocker. The shocker is that Firth will allegedly be playing a vampire in the flick; it turns out said flick is apparently inspired by Bram Stoker’s classic horror novel Dracula. (Hence the title, I guess.) The vamp angle is completely news to me.
The material sounds dark, too. The paper says that in on scene, Firth’s character stabs a victim in the neck with scissors; in another, he beats someone to death with a tree branch. Ouch.
Of course, Park has already played around with bloodsuckers, in 2009’s uneven THIRST. This would appear to be a much different beast. The cast couldn’t really be more top-notch, especially considering Firth is the “It Brit” of the moment. Shall be very interesting to follow this one’s development.
