Is Disney developing a Hocus Pocus 2? If so, why?!

Children of the 80s and 90s will likely have a vague recollection of Kenny Ortega’s 1993 effort HOCUS POCUS. You know, it was the one where Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and that one irritating chick from SISTER ACT put on fright wigs and hideous make-up and tormented a young Thora Birch in a cheesy-looking graveyard set? I can personally swear that I’ve never even seen the movie (not ashamed to say that, either), but I recall the commercials for it vividly. Just as vivid was my reaction: Ah helllll naw!

In any case, almost twenty years later, Disney is evidently digging this title out of the grave for a sequel. According to Moviehole – and why would they lie about such a thing? – the film will be titled HOCUS POCUS 2: RISE OF THE ELDERWITCH. No plot details have been revealed, but they don’t really matter.

Seems like quite the random sequel, if you ask me. Here’s one flick that could actually get the remake treatment and no one in the world would raise a stink. Maybe the key castmembers from the first one are returning?

Here is Disney’s amusing synopsis for the original HOCUS POCUS:

You’re in for a devil of a time when three outlandishly wild witches — Bette Midler (BEACHES, BIG BUSINESS), Sarah Jessica Parker (HONEYMOON IN VEGAS), and Kathy Najimy (SISTER ACT) — return from 17th-century Salem after they’re accidentally conjured up by some unsuspecting pranksters!

It’s a night full of zany fun and comic chaos once the tricky 300-year-old trio sets out to cast a spell on the town and reclaim their youth — but first they must get their act together and outwit three kids and a talking cat! Loaded with bewitching laughs, HOCUS POCUS is an outrageously wild comedy that’s sure to entertain everyone!

Wild! Zany! OUTRAGEOUS!
