It is rise of the planet of the dogs in the chilling trailer for White God

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

While I am not a dog person, I can fully attest to the power animals can have over their owners. I am as appalled by violence to dogs as I am to people. That being said, packs of dogs scare the shit out of me. So, in seeing the new trailer for Cannes winner WHITE GOD, I felt pretty uneasy.

The film, from Hungarian filmmaker Kornél Mundruczó, is a dramatic film about the connection between a young girl and her pet. It is also a political parable and a disturbing fantasy. Watching the trailer and you will be reminded of movies ranging from PLANET OF THE APES to BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD. This is definitely a unique looking movie.

When young Lili is forced to give up her beloved dog Hagen, because it’s mixed-breed heritage is deemed ‘unfit’ by The State, she and the dog begin a dangerous journey back towards each other. At the same time, all the unwanted, unloved and so-called ‘unfit’ dogs rise up under a new leader, Hagen, the one-time housepet who has learned all too well from his ‘Masters’ in his journey through the streets and animal control centers how to bite the hands that beats him.

By the end of the trailer, I wasn’t sure if I still wanted the dogs to win or if the humans deserved what was coming to them. In either case, this movie definitely caught my attention. The film will be in competition for the Best Foreign Film at the Oscars this year, so stay tuned for more.

WHITE GOD opens domestically on March 27, 2015.
