PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES

Who’s In It? Johnny Depp, Geoffrey Rush, Penelope Cruz, Ian McShane, Sam Claflin, Kevin McNally, Keith Richards

Who Made It? Directed by Rob Marshall (Disney)

What Is It? Swaggering swashbuckler Jack Sparrow hits the cinematic seas for a fourth voyage, this time in a race to find the fabled Fountain of Youth. (And rum.) The quest is complicated by the infamous Blackbeard, his bouyant daughter, mermaids, zombies, and Captain Jack’s formerly skeletonized nemesis Barbossa.

How’s It Look From Here? Disney is hoping you haven’t nearly had your fill of Depp’s boozy eye-linered plunderer (especially since they’re already working on PIRATES 5), and is somehow simultaneously reeling in the scope and stabbing at your face with 3D. On the plus side, the film was shot in the Mouse House’s branded Disney Digital 3D, meaning it will spare you the inferior conversion process.

All the FX bloat tends to be secondary to Jack’s antics in the PIRATES series anyway, and the most intriguing aspect of this one is seeing how the tone will differ under the direction of Rob Marshall (CHICAGO, NINE), stepping in for departed POTC trilogizer Gore Verbinski.

OUTLOOK

Captain Jack sets sail without competition — with only a single new wide release this week, your biggest decision (besides whether to pronounce it Ca-RIBB-ean or Carib-BE-an) will be whether to see the POTC:OST in 3D or good old-fashioned flat. Otherwise you can seek out Woody Allen’s latest limited-release MIDNIGHT IN PARIS, or catch one of this summer’s other big flicks (again).
