We’ve heard Guillermo del Toro update us on the progress of his next film, AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS, numerous times; most recently, he gave us all the heads-up that the project was his sole priority at the moment, allaying any worries that his hundreds of other films in development might be distracting him.
Now, it’s producer James Cameron’s turn to yap about the flick. The other half of the powerful duo working on the H.P. Lovecraft adaptation spoke with FEARnet the other day and offered up a status report.
“Oh we’re very, very actively pre-producing the film right now with Universal. The design work is phenomenal, both the three-dimensional and two-dimensional design work, the physical maquettes, the CG test scenes; the artwork is phenomenal. The fans certainly won’t want for a visual feast with this film. But there’s [still] a bunch of number-crunching and “How you gonna do it?” and “How you gonna make it?”; “Where you gonna do it?” All that stuff”
Cameron also makes it clear that it’s 100% del Toro’s vision, and that he (Cameron) is acting as the very definition of a producer.
“He’s got a real vision for the film. It’s very, very well-developed in his mind. You know, I’m just there to facilitate his vision. I don’t have any strong sense of authorship; zero sense of authorship. I’m just there to try to get it made and help him do the movie that’s in his head.”
The plan still seems to be to commence filming in June, so hopefully we’re going to be hearing a lot more about MOUNTAINS real soon.
