James Mangold confirms Wolverine 3 to begin filming in early 2016

After the X-MEN film universe was almost killed by the poor reception for X-MEN: THE LAST STAND and the WOLVERINE origin movie, James Mangold and Hugh Jackman teamed up and redeemed the character with THE WOLVERINE. We already knew that 20th Century Fox had given the greenlight for a third film in the standalone franchise, but now we have the good news as to when it will be getting underway.

In a brief exchange on Twitter, Mangold was asked when production would begin on the sequel to THE WOLVERINE. Here was his response.

As we know from X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST, the timeline for all of the mutant characters has been shaken up. What this means for the continuity after THE WOLVERINE is unknown, but it does open up the possibilities for crossovers we thought impossible. Plus, with Hugh Jackman saying he would be open to cameo in DEADPOOL next year, we may be on the verge of getting a heck of a lot of Logan on the big screen. If production is set to start early in 2016, we will likely be hearing casting announcements towards the end of this year. Get excited, people!

THE WOLVERINE 3, or whatever it will be called, hits theaters on March 3rd, 2017.
