Dawson’s Creek star, James Van Der Beek, dies at 48

Sad news has reached Hollywood as word about the death of Dawson’s Creek actor James Van Der Beek circulates. The beloved film and television actor was 48.

Van Der Beek was diagnosed with colorectal cancer in 2023 and made his diagnosis public in 2024. The actor’s family announced his passing via Instagram, posting, “Our beloved James David Van Der Beek passed peacefully this morning. He met his final days with courage, faith, and grace. There is much to share regarding his wishes, love for humanity and the sacredness of time. Those days will come. For now we ask for peaceful privacy as we grieve our loving husband, father, son, brother, and friend.”

Van Der Beek’s early days

After cutting his teeth on Off-Broadway productions, Van Der Beek landed his first television role on a 1993 episode of Nickelodeon’s teen comedy series Clarissa Explains It All. From there, Van Der Beek appeared in select episodes of As the World Turns and Aliens in the Family. In 1999, he starred as Mox in the Brian Robbins-directed football drama Varsity Blues, opposite John Voight and Paul Walker. Robbins’ film added to Van Der Beek’s star power after his starring role on the WB teen sitcom Dawson’s Creek. The coming-of-age drama was a career starter for several stars, including Katie Holmes, Michelle Williams, Joshua Jackson, and Busy Phillips. Van Der Beek’s role as Dawson Leary is the stuff of legend in specific circles. Dawson’s tearful breakup with Katie Holmes’ Joey is a crown jewel of meme lord culture, and Dawson’s Creek still serves as a blueprint for teen drama despite its age.

Van Der Beek was a man of many talents

Van Der Beek was a multi-talented actor with more than Dawson’s Creek to offer. In addition to starring in films like The Rules of Attraction, Stolen, and Labor Day, he appeared in numerous TV series, including Mercy, Friends with Better Lives, Pose, and more. He was also a gifted voice actor, having recently voiced Boris in the Disney Junior animated series Vampirina. In addition to playing characters, Van Der Beek was unafraid to poke fun at himself by playing himself in Kevin Smith’s Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back and Jay and Silent Bob Reboot.

It’s always devastating when someone so full of life dies so young. Van Der Beek is survived by his wife, Kimberly Brook, and six children. We wish Mr. Van Der Beek safe passage to the Great Hereafter and hope that his family, friends, and fans find peace with his passing as time ticks on.
