Jason Momoa thought he was playing Lobo for DC

While we know him best as Aquaman, Jason Momoa thought Zack Snyder was going to cast him as Lobo in Batman v Superman.

With the release of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom just days away, the superhero sequel isn’t looking to be swimming to any record numbers. And while Jason Momoa is now synonymous with the character (sorry, Vinny Chase), he expected his DC trajectory to be a bit different before he first appeared in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. As it turns out, he thought he’d be cast as Lobo.

As Jason Momoa told Fandango (as per CBR), “I originally thought I was going to be playing Lobo in the very beginning,” naming the Czarnian character first introduced in 1983. “I auditioned for Batman, and I almost didn’t do it, because I was like, ‘This is silly. It’s not going to be me. Why am I auditioning for Batman?’ But it was just a run of the mill audition, and then I get called in right after Affleck gets announced, and I’m like, ‘Oh, f***. Of course I’m going to play the bad guy.’ So, I was like, ‘Yeah, I’ll come in, beat ’em up [Batman and Superman], and die, like I do.’”

Jason Momoa admits he jumped the gun during a meeting with Zack Syder by dropping Lobo’s name, which the director was quick to shut down. When Snyder told him he would be Arthur Curry aka Aquaman, Momoa was actually disappointed. Hm, maybe he had access to the Orb of Nabu…

Jason Momoa’s time as Aquaman does seem to be winding down, which could very well hold if The Lost Kingdom gets gutted this weekend. There, too, are plans for DC to move forward with their “Gods and Monsters” label, which could give them an opportunity to distance themselves from their past duds – and even get Momoa on board as Lobo.

Outside of Jason Momoa, Lobo projects have been tied to other people as well, with names like Guy Ritchie, Brad Peyton and even Michael Bay in talks to direct at different points. Dwayne Johnson was about the closest to playing the role but would move on to Black Adam.

Do you feel Jason Momoa’s days as Aquaman are numbered? How do you think he would have done as another character at DC? Give us your thoughts in the comments section below.
