Jerry Bruckheimer shares the basic plot for Top Gun 2: Tom Cruise vs Drones

Even after the unfortunate passing of Tony Scott, producer Jerry Bruckheimer and Tom Cruise have stated that they are still hoping to get a sequel to TOP GUN made in the near future. But, with Cruise busy making movies with little things like completed screenplays, casts, and directors attached, it is still up in the air when TOP GUN 2 will happen.

In a recent interview with The Huffington Post, Bruckheimer was adamant that TOP GUN 2 is going to be coming soon and even shared some of what the plot will be for the film taking place at least thirty years after the original.

“The concept is, basically, are the pilots obsolete because of drones. Cruise is going to show them that they’re not obsolete. They’re here to stay,” Bruckheimer said. “It’s just getting to the starting place. Fortunately for Tom, he’s very busy, so you have to find a slot he can fit into and get a budget that Paramount feels they can make the picture.”

From how I interpret that, Tom Cruise would basically be taking on a role similar to Tom Skerritt‘s in the original TOP GUN, a mentor and commanding officer to a group of younger pilots. It could still be conceivable that Cruise may be a pilot as well, but that would be stretching things a bit. Cruise certainly can play younger but I think moving him to a mentor role is the better option.

TOP GUN remains one of the most popular movies of the 1980s and a fan favorite for those who many. Could a sequel still evoke the same level of popularity so many years later? Stay tuned.
