Joby Harold brought in to rewrite Doug Liman’s All You Need Is Kill

Damn, has it really been seven months since last hearing anything on the ALL YOU NEED IS KILL front? Good gravy!

Well, Variety is now reporting that Warner Bros. has found a scribe to rewrite the Doug Liman directed thriller. His name is Joby Harold.

Harold wrote and directed the 2007 genre flick AWAKE, and has since gone on to pen some heavyweight Hollywood scripts. He wrote the Tina Fey/Meryl Streep film MOMMY AND ME, which is being directed by Stanley Tucci. He also has something called FOUNTAIN CITY in the works for director Andrew Adamson. Going back, he also wrote “Army of the Dead” for Zack Snyder and “Ronin” for Frank Miller.

But back to ALL YOU NEED IS KILL. Based on the 2004 Japanese novel by Hiroshi Sakurazaka, the story is told from the first person point of view of the protagonist Keiji Kiriya. Keiji is a new recruit in the United Defense Force, fighting against the mysterious creatures called ‘Mimics’ which have laid siege to Earth. Keiji is killed on his first sortie, but through some inexplicable phenomenon wakes up having returned to the day before the battle, only to find himself caught in a time loop as his death and resurrection repeats time and time again. Keiji’s skills as a soldier grows as he passes through the time loops trying to change his fate.

Last we heard, Ryan Gosling had been in discussions to play the lead in the film. Guess we’ll see if that holds. Remember, Liman is doing a sci-fi flick called LUNA first. At least that seems to be the plan.
