Who likes an alcoholic that solves murders? I know I do.
So does Johnny Depp who wants to do a new version of THE THIN MAN, a novel written back in 1934 by Dashiell Hammett. The plot centered on, “Nick Charles who — after marrying wealthy, young socialite Norah — gives up a career as a hard-boiled gumshoe to become a semi-professional alcoholic and full-time trophy husband.” Hammett never created any sequels, but it did spawn a six film franchise starring William Powell and Myrna Loy. There was also a television series on NBC that only ran for a very short time from 1957 to 1959.
It turns out that Depp really wants his director from his most current film, PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES, Rob Marshall to helm the film.
Depp is getting the film set up over at Warner Bros. The studio has also slapped together a short list of screenwriters to pen the script. On that list are the names of three directors– Terry Rossio (PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN), Jerry Stahl (PERMANENT MIDNIGHT) and Christopher McQuarrie (THE USUAL SUSPECTS).
Of course, Depp wants the lead role of Nick. He said this about the project, “The Thin Man has long been a favorite of mine and with Rob at the helm, I know we’re in great hands.” Warner Bros. Pictures president Jeff Robinov added this, “There is no one more perfectly suited to portray Nick Charles than Johnny Depp.” The plan is to take the elements of the first two THIN MAN films and condense them into one film. It will be true to the period and given a “SHERLOCK HOLMES-like stylized treatment”.
