Joss Whedon passed on Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot back in 2009

When the news of the BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER reboot came about, riots ensued. People were running through their hometowns filled with rage armed with pitchforks and molotov cocktails looking to make someone pay. How dare they give Buffy a new face and on top of all that hire another writer that isn’t Joss Whedon!

WHAT IS THIS F*CKERY?!!!!!

But wait. Joss already knew about this “reboot” back in 2009. While we’re at it, I want to also put it out there that we are talking about rebooting the movie from 1992 that starred Kristy Swanson as the Buffster. I quite enjoyed that movie and Kristy Swanson, but as a Buffy fan, Sarah Michelle Gellar will always in my heart be the chosen one.

So word is that back in 2009, BUFFY rightsholders Fran Rubel Kuzui and husband Kaz Kuzui started developing the reboot with Vertigo. Whedon was presented with the opportunity to get in on it but passed to do other projects like THE AVENGERS. After getting the no from Whedon, the producers went in search of another writer. They decided to hire actress turned screenwriter Whit Anderson to take on the job. Anderson’s new take on the Buffy mythos impressed the producers so much that they decided to keep it and present it to studios.

Fox, who originally distributed the movie in ’92, passed on the film. Warner Bros. immediately pounced on it based on the logic that Whedon or no Whedon, people would still flock to see the Buffy reboot. Dislike.

It doesn’t matter whether you are rebooting the series or the movie, the character is so iconic and beloved by fans. While Whedon may not be a blonde teenage girl, he is the essential part of Buffy who gives the character her voice. Whedon says no, I say no. What do you say? “Does the word “duh” mean anything to you?”
