Joss Whedon talks about story and women in The Avengers

It’s still almost two years away from hitting screens, but that’s just plenty of time for us to discuss and speculate on Marvel’s massive hero collaboration, THE AVENGERS.

While on a visit to Australia, writer-director Joss Whedon addressed the team’s shortage of female members, with Scarlett Johansson’s bodysuited bonebreaker Black Widow providing those curves. “It is true that the movie is only going to have one female Avenger,” Whedon admits. “But she will not be the only female character.”

While this could mean a potential appearance from one of the ladies in the other Marvel Universe movies (and you can toss out a surprise appearance by the Wasp), my guess is something more along the lines of Nick Fury’s right-hand man at SHIELD actually being a right-hand woman. Whatever the case, the guy behind “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” certainly isn’t likely to give the shaft to the fairer sex. So to speak.

Whedon also talks about how he took the salad bar approach to concocting the assemblage of Avengers: “It will be a new story that has many things from different arcs of the comics in it. There is no one Avengers story that you can just do the way that you can do the origin of Spider-Man. You really have to cull from the original and The Ultimates, which is one of The Avengers titles.”
