Joss Whedon’s next project is a WWII horror film

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

We all heard the news about how much Joss Whedon wants to do a STAR WARS film. But, let's be real, that's going to be a long ways away (what with ROGUE ONE, the untitled HAN SOLO flick, and both VIII and IX coming first), not to mention the fact that he hasn't even been officially offered the position (if it'll ever come). So what's next for our pasty nerd hero? Well, I'll let the man who gets paid millions of dollars for his words describe it to you himself:

I’m in the middle of a screenplay that I am extremely passionate about…it’s definitely a departure from the things that I’m known for. It’s as dark as anything I’ve ever written. I just said, ‘OK, id, your turn.’ I would write scenes and be like, ‘Oh this is great! I shouldn’t be allowed near people.’ It’s a historical fiction/horror movie about a time when the world was going insane, World War II. I got to tell you, I was in Germany and Poland doing research for this movie and I was seeing so many parallels [to the U.S.]. And I know it’s a shopworn thing to compare the orange guy to the little guy with the mustache, but you see things, indelible things in terms of propaganda, the state of the country, and the parallels are eerie as f*ck.

Comparing "the orange guy to the little guy with the mustache"? Brilliant.

But who gives a shit about politics and what some random filmmaker or random film news editor thinks? The most important things are a) Joss Whedon is back, baby! And b) holy shit, a WWII horror film? When was the last time that was a thing? PUPPET MASTER III? Either way, I'm stoked.

Now, I know Joss Whedon can be bit of a polarizing figure around here. While most people love his quippy, rapid-fire dialogue, others f*cking loathe it (I happen to be a fan). And it's true FIREFLY is pretty universally praised, however his other shows (like BUFFY, or especially DOLLHOUSE) aren't quite as well-regarded. Hell, his limited film work is even less so (I actually like all of Joss's films, including AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON…even if I only liked it and didn't love it). So I enjoy his stuff is what I'm saying, and am excited to see more. The fact that this new film will have a unique premise, and also be a bit out of his wheelhouse (he co-wrote CABIN IN THE WOODS, and you could argue BUFFY has horror elements, but both of those were also part comedies, so I think this might be his first straight-up horror film) is really exciting. But whatever, he could be making a gritty ZIGGY reboot and I'd be down.

So what do you guys think? Fan of Whedon or nah? And if you are, what do you think of his new idea? Sound off below!
