Jurassic World: Dominion is now playing in theaters, uniting two generations of the Jurassic era for the first time. Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard return as Owen Grady and Claire Dearing, but they’ve also been joined by Sam Neill as Dr. Alan Grant, Laura Dern as Dr. Ellie Sattler, and Jeff Goldblum as Dr. Ian Malcolm. Very exciting for fans who have been waiting for the original Jurassic Park stars to return for a long time.
The new film takes place four years after the destruction of Isla Nublar with dinosaurs now living, and hunting, alongside humans all over the world. This fragile balance will reshape the future and determine, once and for all, whether human beings are to remain the apex predators on a planet they now share with history’s most fearsome creatures.
Unfortunately, Jurassic World: Dominion hasn’t exactly been receiving reviews befitting the conclusion of the Jurassic World trilogy. The film is currently sitting at 33% on Rotten Tomatoes (although the audience score is at 80%). In his review of the film, our own JimmyO couldn’t find much to like beyond the nostalgia of the original cast and the dinosaur action.
If you want to see dinosaurs, at least you’ll enjoy that. Prehistoric creatures doing their thing are the best part of Jurassic World: Dominion. Much of the time you have more compassion for them than you do for many of the human characters. Maybe that’s all the time. Unfortunately, the movie as a whole feels so obvious and familiar. Even still, you’ll find moments that work thanks to the nostalgia factor from the original cast. And even the worst sequels in JP and JW have a moment or two that shine. Yet Dominion avoids going anywhere new or inventive and just becomes a greatest hits of what’s come before.
Despite the lackluster reviews, Jurassic World producer Frank Marshall has previously confirmed that the franchise will continue. “Jurassic World: Dominion is going to wrap up this trilogy, but we’re not resting on our laurels,” Marshall said. “We’re going to sit down, and we’re going to see what the future is. We have that wonderful series, Camp Cretaceous, on Netflix. We obviously want to make quality, good movies with great storytelling, great writers and directors, but we’re definitely looking to do more in the Jurassic world.” Let us know what you thought of Jurassic World: Dominion in the comments below!
