Karl Urban will be the Law in the new Judge Dredd movie

JoBloJoBlo

UPDATE: Empire confirms that Karl Urban will indeed be wearing the famous  head-bucket, and that the producers plan to make “a very hard, R-rated, gritty, realistic movie of Dredd”.

7.21.10: After being kicked around the Cursed Earth by Sylvester Stallone, futuristic lawman JUDGE DREDD is on his way back to heaters.

A different actor will be slipping on the helmet (and keeping it on this time, remaining true to the character’s comic history). Bleeding Cool claims that man will be Karl Urban, who they say has been “offered the role”.

Urban certainly has plenty of geek cred, looking at a quick rundown of his genre work: STAR TREK, LORD OF THE RINGS, CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK, DOOM, “Xena: Warrior Princess”, and the upcoming comic adaptations RED and PRIEST. Seems like a decent choice to me, but what say you?

The $50 million 3D production will be directed by Pete Travis (VANTAGE POINT) from a script by Alex Garland (SUNSHINE, 28 DAYS LATER). The story was described in a recent review at The Playlist as like “DIE HARD taking place within the world of BLADE RUNNER”, with Dredd battling gangs and drug dealers in Mega City One.
