Kevin Williamson broke into the entertainment industry with his fresh and fun script for the 1996 slasher Scream – and over the last thirty years, he has been building a strong career for himself, with much of his work remaining in horror territory. Now, he has revealed that he’s working on another genre project – and this one involves some of the most popular, enduring horror characters of all time: the Universal Monsters!

Since writing Scream, Williamson has gone on to write I Know What You Did Last Summer, Scream 2, The Faculty, Teaching Mrs. Tingle (which he also directed), Cursed, Scream 4, Sick, and Scream 7 (he directed that one, too). He did uncredited script work on Halloween H20 and created or co-created the TV shows Wasteland, Glory Days, Dawson’s Creek, Hidden Palms, The Following, Stalker, The Vampire Diaries, Time After Time, Tell Me a Story, and The Waterfront.

During an interview with Esquire, Williamson revealed that he was working on the Universal Monsters project before the opportunity to direct Scream 7 came up, so he had to hit pause on it while he went off the make the slasher sequel. Now that Scream 7 has been released, he can turn his attention back to the classic monsters.

Williamson said, “Netflix and Universal were very kind to let me go direct Scream 7 and put some projects on hold, and now I’m focused on those. The one I’m writing right now is a show. You might call it an adult Vampire Diaries. It’s based in the Universal monster land. I get to play with some of those characters like Dracula and Frankenstein and the Wolf Man and have fun there.

I have to admit that I’ve missed out on a lot of his TV shows, but I have had an appreciation for Williamson’s work ever since the first Scream, and I am a huge fan of the Universal Monsters. I make sure to take some time to visit them every Halloween season, so I look forward to seeing what Williamson will do with the characters.
