A couple of days ago my co-worker Omar wrote about a little project called THE KENTUCKY FRIED HORROR SHOW, a weird-sounding piece of Southern gothic about a group of New Yorkers who travel to Kentucky, not hoping to run into a clan of blood-spilling Satanists. Their hopes are denied.
The main piece of interest in the article was that Jessica Simpson was in negotiations for a role. Now director C.L. Gregory talks to Fangoria about the beating he and the film has already received for involving the blond, as well as what we can expect from K.F.H.S.:
“I’ve taken a great deal of heat in the media for my desire to bring her onto this project. Most [people] honestly don’t give her credit when it comes to her acting abilities. But I have held out that Jessica could really branch out with her craft on this type of project, and I’m committed to casting the best when it comes to my films. If I felt she couldn’t perform well, I wouldn’t be considering her for the lead role, and I believe the audience will enjoy seeing her work on screen.”
Why is he taking heat? What, are people so completely consumed with excitement for THE KENTUCKY FRIED HORROR SHOW that they don’t want it being ruined by the presence of the dopey pop star? Were they hoping Meryl Steep would get the role?
In Gregory’s defense, its not like he’s casting Simpson as a rocket scientist or Harvard professor (if he is, then he should indeed be pelted with rocks). Most likely, she’ll be playing a bubbly, spunky, but none-too-quick-witted gal who survives the onslaught of the satanic cult, at least until the final reel. She should be able to pull that off, right…?
About the film, Gregory explains: “I’m trying to bring back the atmosphere of horror films from the ’70s. It’s a throwback to those exploitation occult horror films, and I’m going to strive to please [horror fans] with graphic scenes and gore.”
Apparently the script contains “an abortion that should stand as the most shocking part. This movie will be very violent.” If that doesn’t perk your day up nothing will (you sick, sick sonofaskunk).
The interview contains a fascinating revelation: when Gregory was very young, he actually attended a church function thrown by Jim Jones, who of course became infamous when he convinced over 900 people to commit suicide in Guyana. Having grown up in a deeply religious home, the event is one of the main influences on his movie, which features a charismatic (but villainous) preacher in the Jones/James Bakker mold. Co-producer Bill Moseley (THE DEVIL’S REJECTS) is most likely going to be taking the role, which sounds pretty great to me.
Also in final negotiations: Hilary Duff, PJ Soles, Joe Bob Briggs, Polly Holliday, and horror-hottie Tiffany Shepis.
