Well, I finally caught the LOST BOYS sequel, THE TRIBE, over the weekend and while it didn’t blow me away, there was still enough gore and humor to keep it from completely sucking. It was also fun watching Corey Feldman ham it up whilst reprising his “Edgar Frog” role (though he sounded like he had taken “deep voice” lessons from THE DARK KNIGHT). The biggest beef I had with the flick was that the main bad dude just wasn’t that, well… bad. I guess nothing can top Kiefer Sutherland’s bad-ass “David” character from the original.
Speaking of which, I came across a pretty interesting recent interview given by Mr. Sutherland (whose gory frightfest MIRRORS
earned over $11 million this past weekend). During the interview, the LOST BOYS
sequel was mentioned and Kiefer was asked if he was approached about appearing
in it. He said no, but did reveal that a prequel
(which wound up being written by writer/director and AITH alumni ERIC RED no less) was once planned long ago after the original came out. Have a look at what Kiefer said:
“There were great [follow-up] ideas. Joel (“guy who nearly ruined BATMAN” Schumacher) had one that was a prequel dating back all the way to the earthquake in San Francisco. The one we talk about in the original. The whole thing I found interesting was that once you were a vampire you go back to that youthful state,” he continues. “The prequel was always going to follow David when he was mortal before he got sucked into the earthquake and got turned. That was Joel’s idea and I thought that was really cool. But apparently Joel was really busy, Warner Bros. was really busy and it didn’t happen.”
That sounds like a pretty interesting idea… as long as it wasn’t filled with bright neon colors and nipples on David’s “vampire suit”.
