Here we go again. Ever since HBO canned Deadwood before its time over a decade ago, there have been rumblings of a potential revival, but for the most part, fans assumed that they'd seen the last of Al Swearengen (Ian McShane) and the Deadwood gang. Then, rumours emerged that Deadwood creator David Milch was having "very preliminary conversations" with HBO about bringing the series back as a movie, and HBO later gave Milch the green-light to get started on the script. This was nearly three years ago, and in that time, Milch delivered his script to HBO, which they deemed "terrific," and the actors expressed their enthusiasm at the possibility of reuniting.
However, despite words of reassurance from HBO's President of Programming Casey Bloys, production on the much-anticipated revival hasn't gotten underway. We still haven't heard anything official, but while speaking with ComicBook.com, Fear the Walking Dead's Kim Dickens, who played Joanie Stubbs on Deadwood, said that the project is one step closer to becoming a reality.
Well, I’ll tell you, next up, looks like all signs are go to do the Deadwood movie this fall. I’m not giving an official release on this or anything, but yeah, they’re locking us down.
As Kim Dickens said, she isn't making an official statement, but it is nice to know that HBO is beginning to lock down the cast. Casey Bloys had previously stated that aligning the schedules of the Deadwood actors was one of the main stumbling blocks, so, fingers tentatively crossed.
Several cast-members, including Ian McShane, Paula Malcomson, Kim Dickens, W. Earl Brown, and more have already commented on the two-hour feature script, but it was Malcomson, who plays Trixie, who offered up a small tease when she revealed last year that the Deadwood movie would be a "big Valentine to Trixie and Al [Swearengen]." Malcomson says that she was also impressed with how David Milch was able to step right back into Deadwood's world after so much time away.
The thing that makes Trixie so fun to play is she’s so loved by David. David loves her so much. I can’t believe her voice is still so present. It’s just right there. It’s really beautiful when you play a character that the writer [adores]. It just goes so deep for him. And I love her [too]. It’s 10 years [later], so it’s going to be really interesting.
The last we heard about the Deadwood film was Timothy Olyphant's disbelief that it would happen, when he said, "I am hopeful. I mean I’m a huge fan of David Milch. The man means the world to me. It’s one of the most amazing creative experiences I’ve ever been able to be apart of, and I’d love to be … you know when you do these things you really miss the people. It would just be a lovely excuse to get all those people back together…That being said, there’s no f–king way it’s ever going to happen." Please, make it happen.
