A movie based on the fantastic videogame BIOSHOCK was announced over two years ago, but a live-action visit to Rapture remains just a dream at the bottom of the ocean.
But the original game’s creative director Ken Levine was recently on DC radio station 106.7, and says it’s still bubbling beneath the surface. “I can’t tell you whether it’s going to happen for sure or it’s not going to happen for sure. But it’s something we are actively discussing, quite actively, and actively working on.” So, there’s still activity.
Levine also mentions that adapting the world and the first-person shooter’s faceless lead character is a massive challenge, making it “so he’s not literally a hand with a gun” and “so he’s actually a person who is going through some sort of progression through his life.”
Set in the 1960s, the first game follows a man whose plane crashes near the underwater city called Rapture. Built by a businessman as a sanctuary for brilliant scientists and artists to freely practice their crafts, Rapture fell into chaos as the inhabitants slowly became obsessed with genetic modification and dark arts.
PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN director Gore Verbinski was initially involved before budgetary and location issues nudged him toward producer role, while 28 WEEKS LATER director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo climbed behind the camera.
