Kino Lorber to release the 1991 film Highway to Hell on DVD/Blu

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

1991's HIGHWAY TO HELL, directed by Ate de Jong from a screenplay by L.A. CONFIDENTIAL / A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 4 writer Brian Helgeland, first came to my attention a couple years after its initial release, when I was studying up on my beloved FRIDAY THE 13TH franchise and discovered that JASON LIVES Jason Voorhees C.J. Graham, one of my top favorite Jasons, had appeared in the film as "Hell Cop" Sgt. Bedlam. I had my mom rent HIGHWAY TO HELL immediately after that (I was only nine or ten at the time) and the movie blew me away, I loved the concept and its "horror-comedy-action-adventure" style.

Starring Chad Lowe, Kristy Swanson, Patrick Bergin, Adam Storke, Richard Farnsworth, Lita Ford, Kevin Peter Hall, the Stiller family (Jerry, Ben, Amy, and Anne Meara), Gilbert Gottfriend, and yes, C.J. Graham, HIGHWAY TO HELL tells the following story:

Charlie and Rachel have eloped to Las Vegas for a secret wedding, but unknowingly, Charlie is about to make a dangerous enemy in the Devil. Satan has taken a liking to Rachel and sent his Hell Cop to bring her down to Hell, where he can satisfy his devilish lust. When Charlie follows, he's thrust into an unexpected world of the living dead: Satanic bikers, cannibalistic bouncing blondes, and a coffee shop where the only thing living is the food. In the midst of this mayhem, the Devil is about to take Rachel for his own. Charlie has one last chance to race the Hell Cop and win back his girl. But nobody beats the Hell Cop – not without a little help from their friends.

Unfortunately, the video store that had the VHS in stock went out of business soon after that. The movie was never available to me again. The DVD era came along, but HIGHWAY TO HELL was left behind in obscurity. It has been over twenty years since my viewing of the film, but now its absence from home video is finally set to be rectified by Kino Lorber.

The Kino Lorber Studio Classics Facebook page announced yesterday that the video distributor has made a new HD master of HIGHWAY TO HELL and will be releasing the film on Blu-ray and DVD. There's no word on a release date yet, just that it's "Coming Soon", nor mention of any special features, but just the fact that there's going to be an official release of the movie is very special in itself. This is definitely one worth adding to the collection.
