How’s this for being fast-tracked? Fangoria got the word today that Focus Features and Random House Films have scored the film rights to Dean Koontz’s upcoming book THE HUSBAND. Not entirely horror, but as we’re talking Koontz here, you know it’s gonna have a level of freakiness, an angle Koontz is a master of.
So is it about a husband that goes on a rampage and kills his family? That’d be cool, but no. It’s basically about this dude who gets a phone call on his cell from these other guys who’ve kidnapped his wife, and they want 2 million in cash or she dies. The book focuses on the shit this guy has to go through to get the money.
Sounds a bit like FIREWALL in a way, but then again, not at all. And who knows what lengths he has to go through. Maybe he has to saw bodies up for the mob. Just a thought. We’ll have to wait until May 30th, when THE HUSBAND hits bookstores everywhere.
While the book hasn’t been adapted yet (they’re still looking for a screenwriter), and there isn’t a director on board or a cast to speak of, Focus Features president James Schamus is in nothing but praise for this project: “Dean Koontz is a master of writing about the necessity of love in a world that is all too often dominated by evil. In returning to that theme in THE HUSBAND, he has told a story that will make for a film equal parts touching and terrifying.”
